Is it possible to change the channel URL to a subdomain OR at least remove the user id from the end?

e.g. mydomain.com/profile/username/1/

I know how to change the 'profile' element, but is it possible to get rid of the trailing id altogether?

e.g. mydomain.com/profile/username/

Or even place the 'profile' part as a subdomain?

e.g. profile.mydomain.com/username/

I think the subdomain approach looks cleaner.

I'm asking somebody to do it for me just point me in the right direction. I'll post a How-To if I manage to get it working.

Ideally my channel path would be mydomain.com/username or username.mydomain.com

I figured out why we can't have just mydomain.com/username - it is because the username can be changed, unlike the id. So multiple users could have the same username. It is effectively more of a channel title in that respect.

However, I do think usernames look more appealing than numbers in URL's, so I will try and figure out a way to make an additional field for a username which cannot be changed.

I will need to check for the availability first, to prevent duplicate names of course.
